Designated Class 52 and although the last members of the Class remained in traffic for a couple of years or so after full TOPS renumbering had been implemented no members of the series were renumbered into the 52XXX series.

The last ordered Class 47s took the numbers from D1100 onwards as the remainder of the build had exhausted the number range D1500 to D1999, D2000 onwards having already been taken. On renumbering all bar one from this series were renumbered into the 47/4 sub Class number range.

D1500-D1999 / Class 47 & Class 57

The Class 47s have a decidedly complex renumbering history which is best dealt with in two parts, firstly the initial renumbering from D series to TOPS then the subsequent changes later.

Designated Class 47 except for D1702-D1706 which were initially designated Class 48 when built the fleet was delivered numbered upwards from D1500 to D1999 with the final few taking the numbers D1100 to D1111 as D2000 onwards was occupied by Class 03. The five Class 48s, D1702-D1706, had been reclassified to Class 47s with standard power units fitted by the time renumbering into the TOPS sequences was implemented.
Basically those Class 47s with steam heat boilers fitted were classified as 47/0s and were renumbered into the series 47001-47298, with some omissions, whilst the Class 47s built without any train heating capacity at all were classified as 47/3 and numbered in sequence into the series 47301-47381. Class 47s fitted with ETH, or in many cases at the time ETH and steam heat boilers, were renumbered into the 47/4 series from 47401 onwards.
As a program of fitting ETH to locomotives was underway during the period of renumbering into the TOPS sequences there were a number of Class 47s which were officially allocated a number in the 47/0 series only to be out-shopped from works ETH fitted and numbered in the 47/4 series. The 47/0 series numbers not being physically applied. The Class 47s that fall into this category are…

So after renumbering into the TOPS series number range, with the exception of four early withdrawals; D1562, D1671, D1734 and D1908, the Class 47s were numbered into three Sub Classes...

47/0 Class 47s boiler equipped: 47001 to 47298 (with a few omissions)
47/3 Class 47s without any heating capacity: 47301 to 47381
47/4 Class 47s with electric train heating or duel train heating capacity: 47401 to 47554 (or thereabouts because further conversions of 47/0s to 47/4s were ongoing at the time)

For the second part of the numbering history for the Class 47s each Sub Class, further Sub Classes created and the subsequent changes are outlined below.

47/0
Many locomotives from the 47/0 series were later fitted with ETH equipment being renumbered into the 47/4 series on conversion. As already outlined above a number of Class 47s that had been allocated to receive 47/0 series numbers didn’t because they were fitted with ETH and numbered directly from the D series into the 47/4 series many other 47/0s gained a 47/0 number before becoming 47/4s. Some of the earliest conversions included 47133 to 47549, 47153 to 47551 and 47260 to 47553. From 47555, the former 47126, onwards all the conversions to 47/4 did at one point carry a 47/0 number with the exception of 47548 which for some reason never existed, and 47601 the details of which are outlined below, conversions from 47/0s to 47/4s continued right through from 47555 to 47665.
47046 the former D1628 was rebuilt as a test bed locomotive for the Class 56 program being renumbered 47601 to reflect its conversion. At the time the ongoing conversions of 47/0s to 47/4s were still in the 475XX range. 47601 was later re-engineered as a test bed for the Class 58 program and renumbered again from 47601 to 47901 to reflect this. As further conversions to 47/4 from 47/0 reached the 476XX mark the 47601 number was skipped, 47250 becoming 47600 then 47185 becoming 47602.
One renumbering for no reason other than a premonition that it would be involved in a fatal mishap was the renumbering of 47216 to 47299, the only available slot at the end of the 47/0 series. However the apparent jinx that had befallen 47216 stayed with it as 47299 which nevertheless remained a jinxed locomotive throughout its career.
A later development to effect the 47/0 series was the renumbering into a later 47/3 series of several locomotives when fitted with multiple working equipment. Once the fitting of this equipment became standard these 47s were renumbered back into the 47/0 number range.

47150 became 47399 but later reverted to 47150
47152 became 47398 but later reverted to 47152
47204 became 47388 but later reverted to 47204
47205 became 47395 but later reverted to 47205
47209 became 47393 but later reverted to 47209
47211 became 47394 but later reverted to 47211
47226 became 47384 but later reverted to 47226

Lastly several Class 47/0s were eventually rebuilt as Class 57s being renumbered into the 57XXX series on conversion.

The original 81 Class 47s in the 47/3 number series numbered from 47301 to 47381 have only undergone a few changes. As with the fitting of multiple working equipment to some 47/0s several 47/3s were also fitted and renumbered but as with the 47/0s these were all renumbered back to their former identities.

47303 became 47397 but later reverted to 47303
47304 became 47392 but later reverted to 47304
47309 became 47389 but later reverted to 47309
47314 became 47387 but later reverted to 47314
47328 became 47396 but later reverted to 47328
47330 became 47390 but later reverted to 47330
47355 became 47391 but later reverted to 47355
47363 became 47385 but later reverted to 47363

An addition to the 47/3 series was 47300 converted from 47468 when it received the equipment from inside 47342, an early crash damaged casualty, whilst 47364 was renumbered to 47981, in the 47/9 series, when it became a dedicated research department locomotive.

Lastly several 47/3s were eventually rebuilt into Class 57s being renumbered into the 57XXX series on conversion.

47/4
Although the number range for this series has spanned 47401 to 47665 with the exception of 47548 and 47601 due to subsequent changes and further re-numberings the series never contained all its possible 263 locomotives at any one time. The creation of further Sub classes, outlined below, were in the main all made from the 47/4 series and technically most were still 47/4s renumbered into a new number range to reflect their respective modifications.

47/6 (1)
The Class 56 test bed locomotive renumbered from 47046 was the original 47/6 but it was later renumbered 47901 and reclassified to 47/9 when again re-engineered to become the test bed for the Class 58s.

47/6 (2)
A batch of 47/4s had their ETH equipment modified to a higher output to work Scottish sleeper services and were renumbered into the number range 47671 to 47677 to reflect these changes. Five of the seven were again later renumbered, 47672 and 47673 regaining their former identities for a while, but the last two in the series 47676 and 47677 remained numbered as such until disposed of.

47616 became 47671 before renumbering to 47789
47562 became 47672 before returning to 47562 and later becoming 47760
47593 became 47673 before returning to 47593 and later becoming 47790
47604 became 47674 before renumbering to 47854
47595 became 47675 before renumbering to 47791

47/7 (1)
Several 47/4s were equipped for push / pull operation between Glasgow and Edinburgh being renumbered into the 47701 to 47716 range on conversion with 47497 later becoming 47717 to replace fire damaged 47713.
One 47/7 has been rebuilt into a Class 57 and renumbered into the 57XXX series accordingly.

A second 47/7 series was created for those 47/4 series locomotives fitted with extended range fuel tanks and modified for use by RES (Rail Express Systems). The second 47/7 series had locomotives from 47/4, 47/6 and 47/8 renumbered into it in the number range from 47721 upwards with a number of omissions; 47721, 47722, 47725 to 47727, 47732 to 47734, 47736 to 47739, 47741 to 47747, 47749, 47750, 47756 to 47793, 47798 and 47799. The latter two locomotives being designated for special uses and being numbered separately at the end of the series.

47/8
A program to equip 47/4s with additional fuel tanks to extend their operational range and to identify those 47/4s already so modified the 47/8 Sub Class, initially numbered in the range 47801 to 47853 was created, with the ‘twin tank’ 47/4s being renumbered to 47/8s accordingly. 47854 was a later addition to the series.
Subsequent changes to the fleet saw a number of 47/8s reverting to their former identities before again being renumbered into the second 47/7 series or being renumbered directly into the second 47/7 series whilst some have been rebuilt into Class 57s and renumbered into the 57XXX series accordingly.

The original 47/9 Sub class was created for the class 58 test bed locomotive initially numbered 47601 which was originally a 47/0.

The second 47/9 series came about after a number of 47/4s on dedication to the research department were renumbered into the Class 97 series to reflect this but were later returned to the Class 47 series. Whilst 47472 reverted to its former identity the others gained a new number in a new 47/9 Sub Class on their return to the 47XXX series.

47480 became 97480 before later becoming 47971
47545 became 97545 before later becoming 47972
47561 became 97561 before later becoming 47973

Additional re-numberings for the research department saw 47531 carrying 47974 for a while before reverting to 47531 along with 47540 which became 47975 for a period before it reverted to 47540.

47971 47972 47973 along with 47981 from the 47/3 series remained numbered in the 47/9 range for the remainder of their respective careers.
